S. Al Dallal and A. Al-Roubaie “New horizons in science, technology and innovation and its impact on sustainable development: the case of the Arab world”

Purpose: Scientific knowledge and technological advancement have made substantial contribution to human progress by developing new tools that paved the way for new discoveries and strengthening the fundamentals for sustainable growth. Over the past several centuries, scientific development has enabled societies to meet some of the important challenges facing people worldwide. The objective of this paper is to shed some light on the role that science, technology and innovation plays in future sustainability with specific reference to the Arab world. Globally, the scientific gap will remain a major obstacle which hinders sustainable development. The Arab world should build sound scientific strategy to sustain development and meet the challenges of the digital age.

Methodology: The paper uses the logarithmic growth of the scientific knowledge and its reliance on theoretical works and experimentations, developed in the 20st century, exhibiting  a wide range of applications in the fields of electronic systems, space science, and nanotechnology.

Findings: The paper highlights the impact of scientific disciplines such as renewable energy, the environment, nanotechnology, generic engineering and biotechnology on future sustainability. These disciplines constitute the core foundation of the scientific revolution that we are witnessing today. The paper reflects on the need for investment in science and technology to support rapid socio-economic transformation and protect the ecosystem to sustain growth and enhance quality of life.

Values: Scientific knowledge and innovation are key drivers of the new economy which open new horizons for fostering economic growth and sustaining development. The Arab world needs to invest in science and technology to leapfrog and create new opportunities for change and rapid transformation.
